[ It's like a fairytale. Underwater princess hears the siren call of beautiful music on land and gets tempted to venture forth from the sea.
Except the princess isn't a princess, he's the child of underwater mob bosses, and he's not a fish, he's a squid. Also, there's no horrific magic where he trades anything important for legs, he already has those.
But he is on shore now, decent only because he has enough arms to cover himself, all coiled around legs and waist, and looking curiously for the sound of that music... ]
[ happily finding a beach, haru danced around the sand, playing his flute with gusto. lucky for everyone, haru had decided to explore in the wee hours while most slept all tucked in and safe within their beds, not overcome with the sudden spikes of allure and desire.
haru really didn't know the true depth and impact of his music! he just liked how it sounded and dancing around everywhere.
twirling in place, haru caught something out of the corner of his eye. wait, no, someone. a naked someone. with - more than two arms. curious. he had never seen anyone look like that but then again he spent most of his life being raised in the forest. ]
Hello there! [ he greeted, lowering his flute so he could shrug off his oversized fluffy sweater to hand over to the mysterious boy who had decided clothes were overrated.
[ Ten might have been gifted a little more curiosity than necessary when he came into this world. Like the gauge that was supposed to stop at two or three got yanked all the way up to eleven. And the parts that should've been distributed wherever it is that self-preservation instincts go, well. Those got thrown into curiosity as well.
It might explain his lack of shame. His lack of wariness.
His lack of a lot of things, but not enthusiasm. When he very nearly runs into the source of the music and said source hands him clothes, he doesn't think twice about accepting.
Now, getting them on is sort of a challenge. ] Hi to you too! [ he says.
His head might be stuck in the sweater when he says it. ]
[ the curiosity and enthusiasm would just thrill haru because he had plenty of his own, probably more than he should but he couldn't help it! the world just had so much to offer so did the people within it.
no matter what, he would always believe in people.
noticing the struggle, haru tucked his flute in his backpocket to try and help. ] I'm Haru and you're really pretty. Did you come out of the sea? My instructors told me all about how people live in all the elements and just everywhere. Isn't that exciting? There must be so much to see and so many to meet.
[ someone might wonder if haru ever needed to breathe. ]
[ Ten says a muffled 'thank you!' from inside the sweater, wriggling around until his head's in the right hole.
And both arms, too. The human ones, anyway. Now that he's sort of decent, he lets his other arms fall away so they're resting against the backs of his legs and along the curve of his backside like they normally do, the longer ones carefully curled so they don't hang too low. ]
Thanks, [ he says again, smiling brightly once he's able to look at Haru properly. ] You're awfully pretty too! I came from the ocean, yes! I've only been on land a couple of times, but I heard your music and I couldn't resist... I think it would be so great to meet more people from places beside the ocean.
Oh! And I'm Ten, by the way. There's more to it, but people who live on land have trouble with our language, I think? That's what my parents said.
[ If Haru doesn't need to breathe, well. Seems like Ten might be in the same camp. ]
[ a faun's music spoke to those who heard it in plenty of different ways, each one unique as it should be! people were never alike and all needed to infer what they wanted from the notes. but fauns invoked things deeper than any ole musician might because there rested some of their magic. fauns could entice but what they enticed and compelled depended on the person hearing the tunes.
it made him wonder at once what ten might have picked up on. what enticed him? what feelings rose up in him and were too strong to resist?
all curious! very curious! ]
Thank you! I'm a faun, so I'm from the forest where there are so many trees, flowers and hedges that take different shapes. They are shaped however the person wants them to be through belief. Kind of the power of suggestion I guess! Mine were always knights because I like them so much. Wouldn't it be so neat to save others?
[ whew, a lot of information there. find some chill, haru. ] What did you feel and think about when you heard me play? If that's not too private for me to ask!
[ Judging by his expression, Ten thinks Haru's explanation is a little bit cute. And possibly somewhat romantic. What a wonderful thing to want, hm? To save people. He grins, not at all put off by his companion's wordiness. Ten's got a bunch of thoughts to share as well. ]
A faun, huh? [ His expression hints that perhaps he does not know exactly what that means. ]
Well, that sounds pretty amazing to me, honestly! Saving people who need saving's an awfully noble thing to try and do. I think I can see why you'd wanna. [ Nodding, he drifts into his own thoughts at the question about what he felt when he heard the music.
What did he feel? Playing with the sleeves of his borrowed sweater, Ten cogitates this. ]
I guess curious at first. Music on land sounds so different from the music we play underwater, so it was like- it was so clear? I couldn't help but be drawn to it. It felt like...
[ He struggles with the words for a moment. ]
I mean, I guess it felt like questions I wanted to answer. It made me wonder.

[ good thing haru picked up on the slight confusion, besides the fact he always enjoyed discussing his clan and where he came from. he had a lot of pride in being a faun and pan happened to be the best patron in his opinion. he always took care of them without fault. ]
A faun is connected to mother earth and she protects us, gifts us with things. We are also connected to music and dance, which invoke different feelings in those who see and hear it! I also have like a goat and deer like appearance.
[ here, he frowned because he remembered the reactions some gave to him when they saw his ears and tails. thankfully, they did not see his hooves or legs! he usually kept that shift away. ]
We have to protect others! It is kind of what we should all want to do. [ he paused, listening. ]
Wondering and questions. Curious. Are there any certain questions that came to mind? They might have some kind of importance!
[ Ten nods along, seeming to be focused very intensely on the words Haru is saying. He's always keen to learn new things, particularly about land dwellers. It's not that he's ever really been discouraged from learning about what goes on outside the world he lives in, but most people where he's from are pretty content not to ask questions about it.
So he's not most people. ]
Do you like to dance? [ he asks, then hits his closed fist against his palm. ] Maybe that's one of the questions!
I know some others though, let's see. [ He taps his chin. ] I guess the first one was, 'who's making that beautiful music?' And you've kinda answered that one, haven't you? I'd definitely like to know more!
How are you connected to the earth? Or, wait, mother earth?
[ dancing and music in general meant a lot to haru and he could not imagine living without either. fauns needed the reaction, the attention or they suffered from the lack of it. all those of magical blood 'fed' somehow, after all. ]
I do love to dance! [ haru responded, excited. ] Do you? [ sea dwellers couldn't really dance, could they? maybe more like twirl and swish, which still counted in haru's eyes. ]
[ beautiful music? a blush stained his cheeks and he said a very soft but pleased 'thank you.' how nice of ten to say!
as of the mother earth part, his eyes looked around until they fell onto some nearby grass. he twisted his wrist and it not only grew higher but sprouted flowers everywhere, making it look somewhat like a tiny garden. ] Kind of like that! But that's just an extent of it.
[ Ten's definitely a good one to be giving a reaction. He's got wide eyes and gasps and applause at hand all the time. He's attentive and eager in all the ways you might want a captive audience member to be. ]
Oh, yeah! I love it! I think it's kind of different in the water than it is for land dwellers, but we love dancing and music where I live. [ He laughs and waves his arms around a little in a sort of demonstration. ] It's really different on land.
But it's all about rhythm, right? [ He's going to explain more, but gets very, very quickly distracted when Haru makes the grass grow and flower. ]
Wow! That's amazing. [ Dropping to eye level with the growth, he practically goes cross-eyed looking at it. ]
How incredible. That's a strong connection, for sure!
I'm still new to learning! [ haru explained with a tiny shrug of his shoulder. ] Elders can do a much better job and create more of what isn't actually there. I kind of just whispered to what already existed to make it come out.
[ it might not make much sense still but he hoped ten understood what he meant with it all. ]
Doesn't music sound much different underwater? [ clearly, he spent very little time within water during the course of his life. ] I've only been in water to bathe, I've never gone like ....under it?
[ giving a bright smile, he nudged at ten gently. ] What all can you do! I'd love to know.
